History SOUTH DUNDAS SOCCER ASSOCIATION The soccer program began in 1996 with approximately 35 children and at that time was called the Iroquois Soccer Association. Each year the membership has grown and this year, our tenth anniversary season, it has reached over 600 children that attend from 10 different elementary and secondary schools. In 2003 the association name was changed to the South Dundas Soccer Association to better reflect the area from where we draw our membership. Last year we had 44 teams and 88 coaches. The program ran Saturday mornings for 10 weeks starting in May and ending in July with a two-day tournament. We utilized many of our older players as referees and linesmen in the tournament as well as many other young people in the area, thereby helping them fulfil their community hour’s requirement for their high school diplomas. In all, the tournament had approximately 90 additional volunteers beside the coaches, helping with the canteen, bbq and field preparation. In recent years the program has expanded to offer additional soccer to those children who wish to learn and play more. The Seaway Kickers travelling teams have completed their 9th year starting with one U16 boy’s team and has now grown to a U13, U15 and U18 boy’s teams and a U13 and U15 girl’s team. These teams participate in the Southside Soccer League. In addition, the younger age group of four and five year-olds have the opportunity to participate in the Canada Day Tournament held for the past three years in conjunction with the Lion’s Club Events at the Iroquois Point. This program started with two very dedicated individuals, Candace and George Menges who started with the idea of offering a physical activity that was affordable to all. Their belief and dedication to both the sport and the ideal that every child should have the opportunity to participate is the cornerstone of our association. The association has grown to include seven additional executive members who have taken on the various duties such as secretary, treasurer, field manager and so forth. We are all committed to providing and safe, educational, and most importantly FUN experience for the children. It is a testimony to the program that many of our coaches come back each year because while they tell us they know nothing about soccer when they start, they learn alongside the children and all have a good time doing so. It is the hope of our association to continue to provide an outstanding program and encourage the youth of today to not only be physically active, but also to make new friendships and have FUN while doing so. It is these individuals who will become the adults of tomorrow and bring the skills they have learned to volunteer with the youth of their generation.
